We presented in a previous article the consequences of poor oral hygiene in young children, as well as the measures that you can put in place to prevent the appearance of dental caries in early childhood. In addition to these recommendations, Dr. Nguyen suggests the use of fluoride to improve the health of teeth in children.

Why use fluoride for teeth health?

Fluoride is a mineral naturally found in nature. It is found especially in soil as well as in water, and in certain foods. The effect of fluorides on the teeth is very beneficial. Indeed, they fortify the teeth by remineralizing them, which then prevent the formation of dental caries. In some cases, fluorides can even reverse the onset of dental caries by repairing teeth that have undergone slight deterioration.

Recommendations on the use of fluorides

It should be noted that fluorides reach their maximum level of efficiency when they are added to the water of current consumption. However, while some municipalities in Quebec are adding fluoride to tap water, not all of them do. This is why the use of fluoridated toothpaste is recommended.

In young children between the ages of zero and three, tooth brushing should be done by an adult. A toothbrush adapted to the age of the child should be used and a grain-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste should be applied. For children aged three to six years, the amount of toothpaste used should not exceed the size of a pea, and brushing should be done under the supervision of an adult who will ensure that the child does not swallow toothpaste. Tooth brushing should be done at least twice a day, after meals, and before bedtime.

In all cases, care must be taken not to use too much fluoridated toothpaste for brushing teeth in children as they could develop dental fluorosis.

Dental fluorosis

It is a condition that can damage teeth in children. An adult cannot develop dental fluorosis. In its light form, it causes the appearance of whitish spots on the teeth and permanently alters their aesthetic appearance. In the most serious form, it causes erosion of tooth enamel, making them more vulnerable to dental caries. This is why the use of toothpaste or fluoridated mouthwash should be done sparingly.

If you need advice on your use of fluoridated toothpaste, discuss it with our dentist. She may recommend appropriate actions to achieve optimal oral hygiene for you and your children.
