Tips to prevent the onset of tooth decay

Tips to prevent the onset of tooth decay

Dental caries affects a majority of the population and is mainly caused by poor oral hygiene and a diet high in sugar. However, some people may be at greater risk of developing tooth decay, despite having good oral hygiene. Some factors include lack of minerals, teeth grinding, misuse of teeth hygiene products and much more.

Here are some tips for patients who are at high risk of developing tooth decay.

Use fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride toothpastes, recommended by the Canadian Dental Association, are an essential hygiene product to prevent tooth decay, strengthen tooth enamel and even to remove some early tooth decay.

  • Brush your teeth with a soft bristle toothbrush for 2 minutes at least twice a day.
  • Brush your tongue to dislodge particles of decaying food that are responsible for bad breath.
  • Floss your teeth once a day, ideally before going to sleep and before brushing your teeth.
  • After eating sweet food, if you can’t brush your teeth, rinse your mouth with water or use xylitol gum or an alcohol-free mouthwash.

Use the correct mouthwash

Mouthwash should be part of the oral hygiene routine. However, the latter must be chosen with care. It is recommended to look for an alcohol-free mouthwash. The alcohol contained in some mouthwashes can dry out your mouth. Also consider a mouthwash with fluoride that will help prevent the demineralization of teeth and protect teeth against bacteria causing decay.

Adopting healthy eating habits

Caries are formed when teeth are exposed to sweet food on a regular basis, such as soft drinks, juices with added sugar or candies. After or at the same time as the consumption of a food high in sugar, the Government of Quebec’s website recommends consuming a firm cheese. The cheese is composed of phosphorus and calcium, which are two elements that help protect the enamel of the teeth. It is recommended to prioritize the consumption of the following food:

  • Milk, yogurt and cheese
  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Whole grain cereals
