5 tips to alleviate and prevent symptoms of sensitive teeth

Do your teeth twinge when you drink a hot beverage or iced tea? Here are some tips to prevent these unpleasant sensations!

Choose your dental care products wisely

Many Canadians suffer from sensitive teeth, but be aware that there are many desensitizing toothpastes to protect your teeth against temperature changes. In addition, the choice of toothbrush is also important. Indeed, tooth sensitivity is often linked to enamel wear and receding gums, so opt for a softer brush! Also consider using a fluoride-based mouthwash to strengthen the enamel of your teeth.

Take care of your oral hygiene

We cannot say it enough but good oral hygiene is the key to limiting not only the formation of cavities and gingivitis, but also sensitivity problems. It is essential to brush your teeth twice a day during 2 to 3 minutes. Finish off this routine with dental floss: flossing does about 40% of the work in removing bacteria and plaque from your teeth. Plaque causes cavities and irritates the gums which can lead to periodontal diseases that worsen tooth sensitivity.

Avoid acidic food and drinks

Acidity promotes the damage of tooth enamel which contributes to more sensitivity. Optimize your diet by avoiding the consumption of citrus fruits, sugary soft drinks, dried fruit, wine, fruit juices and sports drinks.

Abstain from teeth grinding

During the night, many people suffer from teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism). Did you know that this wears down enamel? It may be wise to use a mouthguard to prevent damage. Talk to your dentist if teeth grinding and clenching becomes a recurring problem.

Consult your dentist regularly

It is possible that these tips are not effective in reducing your tooth sensitivity. The latter can result from the presence of cavities, fractured teeth or root canal problems. At this point, it is important to consult your dentist who will then proceed to a thorough cleaning and examination of your mouth.
