How to prepare for a gum graft?

Gums protect the roots of your teeth. However, sometimes you can lose some of the gum tissue. In order to avoid these kinds of gum problems, (such as a tooth getting loose) caused by this gum recession, gum grafting will usually be the surgery suggested by your dentist. To reduce the risks of complications related to this surgery, proper preparation for the gum graft is essential. Here are three tips for making the intervention a success.

1. You may have to take antibiotics before the surgery

Before the surgery, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics for you to use before the day of the surgery. Why? Simply because they will reduce the risks of any infection that may occur after the operation. To put the odds on your side, it is important that you take them as prescribed. Do not forget to inform your dentist of the different medications that you are already taking.

2. Preparation for gum grafting requires good oral hygiene

Before your gum graft, adopting a good oral hygiene, will not only make the surgery easier but will also reduce the risks of complications. To do this, be sure to thoroughly brush your teeth after your meals and to floss properly. Rinsing your mouth with a good mouthwash is also a good idea. Your oral health needs to be at its best to minimize the risk of postoperative infection.

3. Avoid smoking before gum grafting

If you are a smoker, be aware that for proper preparation for gum grafting, you must stop smoking at least a week before the procedure. To help you, there are several alternatives to smoking, such as nicotine patches and gums. By doing so, although difficult for some, it will help you maintain your oral health, which will increase the chances of success of the intervention.
Like any surgical procedure, the gingival graft, even if its success rate is very high, is a very delicate procedure. That’s why it’s important that you follow these three rules for proper preparation for your gum graft. You won’t need to worry!
