Do you know what periodontal disease is?

Do you know what periodontal disease is?

Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gums caused by the accumulation of plaque and tartar and is the main oral health problem in adults. Unfortunately, the fact that it causes no pain makes it difficult to detect. This is why it may take several years before a person knows they have the disease.

Generally, people visit because their teeth start to move, not because they are in pain. We must be aware of this disease because it can affect the bone that supports the teeth and eventually it can lead to tooth loss. Therefore, be careful of bad habits (poor oral hygiene, smoking and certain medications) that can turn into early signs of periodontal disease, including:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or using dental floss
  • Bad breath
  • Redness, swelling and tenderness of the gums

It is also possible that certain poor health conditions affecting the immune system and hereditary factors contribute to periodontal disease or gum disease.

First stage of periodontal disease: gingivitis

Gingivitis (gum inflammation) is the initial stage of the disease. If you suffer from chronic gingivitis mention it to our team that will perform a periodontal screening during your exam. Screening is done using a special instrument that measures the depth between the teeth and gums (pocket depth). When the gum is healthy, the measurement is low. If the screening shows a problem, a more advanced examination will be necessary.

The prevention of periodontal disease

You just need to perform a few simple actions regularly to prevent gum disease. Remember to brush your teeth (at least twice, if not three daily), use dental floss (every night) and the annual visit to the dentist … and you’ll have it!

The Order of dentists of Quebec shares some interesting information about gum disease.
