Just like the rest of your body, your oral health is strongly related to the food that you ingest, and to the vitamins and minerals that you bring to it. Furthermore, without a good dentition it will be difficult to eat well. Nutrition and the health of your teeth go hand in hand.

Nutrition and dental health

The most common dental diseases, caries and gum disease can be bypassed if not avoided thanks to the good nutritious elements contained in calcium and vitamin D.

The consumption of food containing vitamin D (for example milk) allows not only for healthy bones and teeth but also healthy gums. What are other examples of foods that help with oral health? Firm cheese and cocoa. The first one because it is rich in calcium, phosphorus and fat; it neutralizes the acid that affects the integrity of the enamel of the teeth. The second one, when combined with milk, helps prevent cavities. Cocoa also contains an active ingredient that helps reduce the enamel solubility.

Which foods and why?

Whole grain cereals, legumes, nuts and grains are rich in magnesium that contributes to the bone structure and teeth. Milk, fish and eggs play a role in the formation and health of teeth. Vitamin C, that is commonly found in fruits such as oranges, melons and kiwis and in some vegetables acts also in the formation and health of bones but also of cartilages, teeth and gums.

Other foods that contain vitamin C are milk, yogurt, cheese, sardines, nuts, sesame seeds, soy milk, and tofu. They build strong teeth. Foods that contain phosphorus (milk, cheese, meat, fish and seafood) contribute to the formation and strength of bones and teeth. Finally, fluoride that is found in water, tea, oysters optimizes the mineralization of the bones and teeth therefore making them stronger. Fluoride also protects teeth from caries.
