We’ve recently presented to you a few weeks ago, an article about tooth decay and the consequences they can have on your dental health. Today, we are showing you a way to save a tooth that has been attacked by bacteria: endodontic treatment also called root canal.

Tooth infection

The tooth is made of essentially three parts: enamel (external part), dentin and the pulp (internal parts). The pulp is made of soft tissue and the nerve tissue. When a tooth has a decay, it can break or crack if not repaired on time. It creates an open area to the sensitive parts. The bacteria can penetrate into the heart of the tooth where an infection can start. The tooth becomes sensitive and painful. An abscess can start to form.

Root canal

Today, with all the progress dental medicine has made, it is now possible to keep a tooth that is sick, thanks to the root canal. The procedure consists of cleaning out the damaged or dead nerve tissue and soft tissue inside the tooth without having to make an extraction. Here are the main steps of a root canal:

  • The endodontist will first proceed to an evaluation of the situation. With an examination and an x-ray of the mouth and teeth, he will be able to have a better idea of the situation of the infected tooth.
  • When the diagnosis is confirmed that and the root canal is recommended, a local anesthetic will be administered by the endodontist.
  • To avoid the bacteria of your saliva to get in contact with your tooth during the procedure, a dental dam will be placed around the tooth.
  • The endodontist will make a small opening in the tooth to get access to the canal and the damaged pulp.
  • The pulp is carefully taken out by cleaning and widening the canal.
  • The canal is then filled and sealed.
  • The tooth is then closed with a temporary or permanent filling.
  • A follow-up is essential to make sure your tooth and the overall dentition healthy.

To find out if a root canal or endodontic treatment is the right treatment for you, you should have your teeth examined. The earlier your tooth decay is treated, the higher the chances you will be able to save it. At Centre de santé dentaire Dre Thu Nguyen, the root canal is done by an endodontist, a dental specialist in root canals.
